Devlog 1 : After the jam - Post Mortem and the future
Well the jam is finally over and it's been a fun jam(of course only two people played my game so far).
Today I want to do a postmortem and kinda discuss my overall way I developed this project:
1.idea - as soon as I saw the jams theme I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my game. I wanted to make an action strategy game where you battle space pirates in a space race of who can colonize more planets. There were always 3 ways the game can end: Win - if you colonize more planets than the enemy . Stalemate - you and the enemy colonized the exact same number of planets. Lose - You died or the enemy colonized more planets than you.
2.gameplay mechanics - You have you, your allies and enemies moving around and colonizing planets. Planets are spawned randomly and planets have their own abilities when colonized which is explained in the game and I really don't want to cover it here. However there were some removed gameplay mechanics that didn't work the way I thought it should. These mechanics will probably be added in a future update.
3.removed mechanics - linking planets - my idea for this strategy game is to have planets that could link together and improve the linked planet abilities. Only one planet allowed spawning ships and that was the Earthlike planet. Toxic could not be linked with anything. Gas and Gas Giants would link with Earthlike planets making the time to spawn ships faster. Waterlike planets had a purpose and that was when linked with a Earthlike planet it would make the Earthlike planet stronger and harder to retake. Minerals when linked with the Earthlike would allow Earthlike to spawn stronger ships(which is still their feature) and allowed Earthlike planets to repair ally ships when in their radius(which is still the minerals planet unique feature). This created a strategy part of my game. If you didn't like the fact that the enemy is spawning more ships just colonize their gas planets linked with Earthlike planets and boom you win the game probably. This feature probably won't return unless people who played this game want this feature.
-shooting - it will be readded later.
4.A.I- I mean it's basic. It just seeks and hunts other planets.
The future:
I plan on updating the game and actually finishing it and polishing it. My first step is to readd shooting, improve the AI and make sure that the game runs well. Then I can add more features into the game like sound, music, an ability to choose a country as a customization option , more UI info like ally and enemy ships and planet stuff and so on.
And that's it. See you all next time.
